Preserving Tradition and Indigenous Craft
in a Modern World

Rosemary Hallgarten
Thursday, May 14
11:00 a.m. | Grand Hall, Fourth Floor

IIt has been said that without tradition, we have no future. In most third-world countries, the push by the first world to be cheaper and faster through machine-made products has all but eradicated centuries of indigenous skills. Rosemary Hallgarten’s mission is to work with artisans around the world, and in particular South America, to ensure that these traditions are preserved and handed down to future generations. She does this by harnessing local skills such as weaving, hand-knotting and embroidery of fabrics, pillows, throws and rugs with a modern aesthetic that ensures the products appeal to a modern audience.
From jewelry maker to textile artist, award-winning Hallgarten’s designs have always celebrated the rich tactile sensuality of her materials. A second-generation artisan, she is the daughter of renowned rug artist Gloria Finn, who partnered with artists such as Milton Avery and Gio Ponti.
